In the numerical simulation of fluid flows, adaptive grid refinement is the local modification of the computational grid during the simulation, based on the requirements of the flow being simulated. In this talk, I will argue that adaptive refinement is becoming essential today for the simulation of realistic, complex flows. After a discussion of design principles for grid refinement methods, the talk will present several case studies of industrial and research flow simulations which rely on adaptive mesh refinement to obtain sufficient accuracy and reliability.
