A plane real algebraic curve is said to be hyperbolic with respect to a real point if every real line going through that point intersect the curve in a maximal number of real points, counted with multiplicities. Using tools of (real) tropical intersection theory, we give a combinatorial characterisation of hyperbolic plane curves near the non-singular tropical limit, and explore several questions around the tropical analogue of the hyperbolicity locus.
